FIFA opens proceedings against president Sepp Blatter over bribery allegations

FIFA has announced that its Ethics Committee will open proceedings against president Sepp Blatter over allegations of bribery.

The investigation has been requested by Mohammed Bin Hammam, who has also recently had corruption proceedings opened up against him, and is due to challenge Blatter for his presidency in elections on June 1.

The allegations are based on Blatter having knowledge in advance of cash payments made to delegates attending a meeting of the Caribbean Football Union, organized jointly by Jack Warner and Bin Hammam for May 10 and 11.

It is alleged that Blatter suggested he would have 'no issue' with such payments, and the Ethics Committee has subsequently opened an investigation against the 75-year-old in compliance with article 16 of the FIFA Code of Ethics.

Blatter has been invited to defend his case in Zurich on May 29, when a hearing by the FIFA Ethics Committee will take place.
